January 27, 2010 some more…
Thought I would share a few more photos from our tour last year. Track bikes look ridiculous all loaded up.

In these photos I was running 46:16, cant quite remember what Sarah was on. I would probably go 46:17 or 18 though in the future, the 16 was rough climbing some of the mountain passes.

wow even 46:17 sounds tough with extra weight, thats what i commute with. your both very inspiring. i have been wanting to tour but have been nervous about equipment and wondering if it was to crazy to tour fixed. what kind of rack do you have, was it hard to attache and maintain. what kind of set up would you recommend?

I had the same thoughts before leaving on my first tour. It seems crazy, but it turned out to be relatively easy. The best part of fixed touring is you need very few tools and spare parts with you, as compared to a fully geared touring bike. I think it was a Blackburn rack, pretty basic, aluminum, but solid. Since my Soma had no mounts for racks I just used the bolt on clamp mounts ( which should come with most racks, if not your LBS should have some). I thought it would be a bit sketchy having the rack mounted this way, but neither of us had problems, it held up solid for the entire trip!
I definitely recommend just attaching a rear rack this way, or going for the alternative of using a trailer of some sort. I had problems initially with my feet hitting the panniers due to the really short back end of the track frame, but I just pulled them back on the rack with bungee cords and it went fine! I hope this helps, and I’m glad others are getting inspired to do similar trips!
